ePaper projects (Handelsblatt, Rheinische Post, Frankfurter Rundschau etc.)(2012-2017)
During my freelance work in Berlin, I contributed to the development, enhancement, and maintenance of several newspaper apps, all built around HTML for layout and display, with native extensions bundled in a custom SDK called NewsFramework. In 2014, Handelsblatt was awarded by Apple as "App Store App of the year (category newspaper)", while the Rheinische Post reached over 30.000 users every day.
Key Facts
- iPad app for one of the biggest newspapers in the Ruhrgebiet
- Handelsblatt iPhone was "App Store App of the Year 2014" in the category Newspapers
- NewsFramework modelled a decent "resource system" and provided offline-download of an issue, including incremental updates
- My tasks included app architecture, modularisation for code sharing, feature development (e.g. SSO or payment), debugging and performance optimization
- Technologies: Objective-C, Swift, HTML/JavaScript, URL Loading System (iOS), (Offline-)Caching, WatchKit, Ad-Integration, Newsstand, Analytics
- Team size: 3-5 iOS, ~ 20 total
ShareTheMeal (UN WFP), Viola and others(2010-2012; 2015 - 2017)
My career as a freelancer started with two years working on the eBook-App "textunes" (now Thalia) and creating interactive children's books, which included developing a converter to transform Flash animations to HTML and CSS 3.
In 2016, I worked for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the "ShareTheMeal" app, which allows users to donate 50 Cents, an equivalent of the cost one meal.
I also workd on "Viola", the prototype of a biographical photo app for the relatives of people with dementia, together as a team of three creatives during a residence at the Social Impact Lab Berlin.
In 2017, I participated in several projects for OTTO in Hamburg (mostly shopping apps).

- Viola did win the audience award of the "Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband" in 2016
- Freetime project "Green Tap"/"Green Touch" as playground to test technolgies (unfinished)
Graphic Design (Freetime)ongoing
I do not only have a degree in computer sciences, but also in design (Dipl. Designer (FH) Multimedia), and sometimes enjoy to craft a logo, design a flyer, and in the past also my own app ideas. It's also great to see something you designed, and not just touch it on a screen, but feel it in your hands!
